Basalt Mano Pestle and Metate

  • Image 1

Artifact Description

A basalt mano pestle and metate grinding stone were excavated from the "Tortugas" wreck site in close proximity at coordinates north of the pump well and just outside the starboard stern hull remains, thus close to the original location of the decomposed galley structure. This standard domestic equipment was used for grinding corn flour. The need to grind flour became increasingly central from the 1570s with the replacement of hardtack for maize used to make cassava bread.
